Red, White, and Blue Star Bursts
Mix and match colorful shortbread stars to make these eye-catching and patriotic cookies. Split your base cookie dough into three portions and add red or blue food color to two of the portions. Roll dough and cut out 3-inch stars, then cut and remove 1-inch stars from the center of each large star. Recombine large stars with a center star of a different color.
- 1 cup (2 sticks) Challenge Butter
- ¾ cup sugar
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- red and blue food coloring
1To make the cookie dough, start by creaming the butter. Then gradually add sugar and flour. Beat until light and fluffy.
2Divide the dough into three equal portions. Add red food color to one portion and blue to another. Keep one portion uncolored.
3Center each portion of dough into its own gallon-sized plastic food storage bag and roll to ⅛-inch thickness. Chill dough anywhere from 20 minutes to several days.
4Preheat oven to 350°F. Cut dough into stars with a 3-inch star shaped cutter. Then use a 1-inch star to remove the centers from your stars. Add colored centers to plain stars and plain centers to colored stars.
5Bake at 350°F for 10 minutes or until edges are slightly browned. Remove from oven and allow cookies to cool.
