Our Company
Challenge Butter. A tradition of quality spanning over 90 years.
President's Message

Legend has it that the name, "Challenge" was determined by the first General Manager of Challenge Cream and Butter Association, J.R. Murphy, as he traveled from the San Joaquin Valley to Los Angeles to begin his new assignment. That night as he was having dinner, he studied a mural on the wall that showed two elk coming to contest which one was going to be "king of the forest". Under this mural, the words, "The Challenge" were written.

Mr. Murphy felt that this was exactly what he and the dairymen that he represented were trying to accomplish. They were challenging the other dairy organizations with a product that was known for its quality.

So began a tradition that has continued for over 90 years. This tradition has been built on QUALITY of PRODUCT and SERVICE. Of course, it could not occur without QUALITY PEOPLE. We are proud of our employees who have ensured the quality of products produced from our creameries for more than nine decades. We are the only organization that provides control from the farm to the creamery to the customer.

The success of the Challenge organization is based upon continuing our traditions of QUALITY and SERVICE, which are accomplished only by the PEOPLE involved. We hope that you enjoy our web page and our products.

About our Company

Challenge Dairy Products, Inc. is a cooperative association responsible for the marketing and distribution of dairy products produced from 600 large family-owned dairies. Challenge Dairy has had a tradition for natural, quality dairy products since 1911.

Challenge Butter is the largest selling brand in the West. Challenge also markets Danish Creamery Butter, a strong brand in Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley. Very early, the management of Challenge recognized the elements of successful butter marketing: consistent quality, consistently promoted. By refusing to sell any butter that did not meet the highest standards, Challenge built a reputation for quality throughout the Western States
